Some believe that the name Darjeeling was derived from two words: “Dorjey”, which means thunderbolt and “Linga” which means place or land, i.e. “The Land of Thunderbolt”. Although, the history is quite old, 1835 is considered to be the landmark year for this place when East India Company made an acquisition of Darjeeling. The altitude of Darjeeling is 2,042 meters (6700 ft.) above mean sea level.
